Stuff...

Well things are going along as usual.

I am still working on getting my thesis committe together to do my thesis proposal but that has been going on for a while.  Overall we are doing well with that.  I am thinking that we are getting close to being successful on getting done with the Vegas seen.  Anyway, I am feeling pretty good about things.

I do wish that I could get a bit more reaction out of my professor for getting equipment fixed or problems solved.  He is pretty busy with all his other projects he has before him but it is dissapointing to struggle with problems and have to wait forever for help to fix them.  Especially when his help will save months of time.  Anyway that is all I have to say about that problem...

This week I am heading to Provo with the family and am quite excited for my break.  I am going to take two weeks off to work on the websites, photograph, Fly fish and tie flys.  Then I will be back to the drawing board.  And honestly I will still work several hours a day on work.  Just not twelve hours a day.

I am also excited for hanging out with family.  Especially my sister Jenny.  We always have a fun time birding, and hanging out.  We are going to take up fly tying, or she is and I am going to teach her the ropes.  Anyway.  I am excited about that as well.

Probably the biggest level of excitement for my is that I will be getting a camera.  Yep I am excited to start taking pictures again and filling up my hard drives.  That as well is another project that I am going to work on.  Organization of my photography.  I also hope to add about another 2000 pictures to my online larders...

I guess that for now that is all.  Oh wait.  So I was substitute teaching the other day at a school and ran into a friend who I knew at BYUI when I was doing my Bachelors.  Her name is Ashley Burgener.  And yes I did go on a date or two with her.  She was actually a much better friend to Alison.  They had many church callings together and had alot of fun.  Anyway she lives and teaching orchestra in Vegas.  It is amazing the links we make and then reconnect later on to.

That is all for the day.

Enjoy!

The End of the Year...

Wow the year is getting old.  I must be getting a bit older as well because I still think of 2007 as barely here.  This usually gets taken care of by May or June.  Anyway today I wish that I could just do nothing for the rest of the year.  I guess that is what everyone wishes.

For me the last few months have been quite busy and I wish that I could have more time.  I rarely have the time or energy to tie a fly or work on my photography.  We will see.  That is what I am most excited about for my vacation.  We will see what happens with the time that I get.

I did order my new camera at last and I am pretty excited.  I am most glad that I will have a camera to take pictures, but not so heady about having a toy.  That is what usually happens to me.  That luckily isn't what I am all about right now.  I just want to make pictures.

My book reviewing project is moving along with the reading of books, but now really in the reviewing.  It is lots of fun to read books with reckless abandon, but to write reviews takes a bit more work.  That project is moving forward as well though.  I have set the goal to do at least a few a week.  I will see how that goes in the next year as well.

As well I am trying to figure the site structure out on my websites that that will be the easiest to follow, use and update without me wasting all my time fumbling over little things.  That is a learning process on all my sites.  I never really thought that I would be spending so much time trying to web design.  I guess we all surprise ourselves where we end up at.

I have probably not much more to add unless I just ramble away.  As fun as that is I still need to get home for a Christmas party tonight and so there I am heading.

Have a great night!

Well things are going well...

Well I am doing pretty well.  I have not written in a while and have been busy.  It is hard to get things done when you have 12 or so directions to go.  That just really lowers how much can be done when you have to spend time in so many places.  Oh well.  The biggest news is that I have now gotten the first few steps going on my thesis proposal and started to form my committee.  This is a big process.  Organizing 4 professors to meet at once is really a dream.  Anyway, things are good.

My kids grow up so fast that each day I come home and see them doing new things each day.  Andrea loves to sit up now, and Zach learns new words each day.  Anyway things are good.  I love being a dad and learning and doing more at school.

That is all for today...

Thanksgiving...

Well things are good.  Currently I am here in Provo Utah with my wife and Is family.  It was really a relaxing week.  We got here Wednesday night late.  It took us a while with bad traffic and last minute problems that had to be taken care of with out insurance before we left town.  Oh well we got out earlier than we had originally thought because of my professors willingness to have class on Wednesday afternoon instead of evening.

The trip in the car went fast because of a pretty good book on tape.  We listened to Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer, and will probably enjoy the end before we hit Vegas.  So far the book is good but the voice of the writer (not the narrator) is not really enjoyable for me.  Anyway.

On Thanksgiving we spent the day with my family and then later went to Alison's for different pies and a few games before bed.  My favorite part of the day was riding the bike with my sister Jenny around the river trail and the lake.  We saw a bunch of fun birds and actually me a deaf birder.  I was quite impressed because I rely on hearing for bird watching so much.  He was trying to get cool bird pictures.  I was quite impressed.

Friday Alison went to Idaho to visit grandparents, and I stayed home and did homework.  It was productive, but not fun.  Oh well.

Saturday we watched the BYU UTAH football game and hung out with family and today we are headed home...we are now having dinner and then we will be leaving so that is what I have for today...

Enjoy!

Graduate School and other things...

Well it appears that I will be applying to graduate school again.  I guess I will hopefully have to do this only once more.  I got a thumbs up of please apply from the University of Michigan.  They offer stipends to all PhD students for 5 years at 20,000 a year.  You have a few months once you get there to settle on a project and it seems like a great school overall.

So I started to apply to that school today and will hopefully be able to get it all taken care of by next Monday.  Yet another project for me to undertake.  I am excited about this one however.  I got denied when I applied there for a masters but I have done better in school will have a masters now and I think I will have a decent chance to gain acceptance.

I have spent the rest of my day struggling to line up a map of my research study area and it is kind of a pain to be honest.  I can't find the maps to put my points on.  So that is causing me a bit of grief.  Once I get the map, the rest will be pretty easy, as I really don't have a lot of information to add, I just need a visual.  I think I will be ale to get some help on that when I meet with my teacher this afternoon.

Today I am going to meet with two of my teachers and I hope that I can get good stuff from them.  I have questions about the classes, and other things ranging to my thesis.  They do have experience and I hope it can be helpful to me today.  We will see.

That is about all, I hope your well!  Have a good one...

You wonder...

Sometimes I wonder if the advances in technology really do us any good or bring more happiness.  Some would say they allow us to suffer longer...

I just found out that they still haven't figured out how to deposit my check into my account.  I guess I will have to do something about that.  For now I have to walk over to the WRM office and get my check and go deposit it by myself.  I mean they want me to work.  The nerve.

I am still wondering what yo get my two year old for his birthday...I think fire but really that is going to mean more trouble for us.  I also wonder why I am worried about more toys.  When he sees that he will want to play with it the rest of the day and things will be great for him.  Maybe some pretend dirt.  How would I go about that...

I am off to the office to get my check...it will be a nice walk.

Have a great day!

A few days in Zion!

Well I have had a long and interesting weekend. Not bad but quite the cause of introspection. I will start at the source then the beginning and then on to the rest of it.

This last week was the first week of November. That means that it was Alison’s birthday. Last year we went to Zion for the fall colors for her birthday. I was afraid I was putting her out by wanting to go camping on her birthday. She was excited. I really have an amazing wife. People just don’t realize that I am the one that is treated well. They think that I treat her well in actuality I am trying to keep her from realizing I am a bum and don’t deserve her. Who would drag a girl camping on her birthday?

Last year was such a pain that Alison informed me this year we would be going back for her birthday. The fall colors were amazing last year and honestly if they were half as good again then we would be there because it was worth it.

So we decided to go camping. It was also quite fortunate that my siblings (all except Robert who is on his mission currently in Jamaica) were there. We had a fun time with other people there especially because they took care of our children. We got to relax and only had to change a diaper and hold a kid once and a while. They did all the rest of the work. They all enjoyed Zion I think. Jenny says that it was actually her favorite national park she has been to. This is her third national park the first two were the Grand Canyon and Grand Tetons. I guess they weren’t as grand as Zion.

Anyway, Alison, Zach, Andrea and I got there Thursday afternoon and had a good day setting up camp walking around and relaxing. My siblings got there late that night. I waited up for them to let them know where they could sleep without waking up Andrea or Zach.
That night getting Zach to sleep was a chore. He was scared of the tent to start with and then wouldn’t lie down at all. So I played a video short I had of baby and mother polar bears. It’s a cute video and after 20 times it did the trick. He relaxed enough that he began to go to sleep. When we turned the lights out in the tent he freaked out. But not the he degree he did the next night. It took about an hour or so before he was actually asleep and doing well.

My siblings got there okay and we all got to bed with no problems. Nathan and Keven slept in Nathan’s new tent and I named it the snore a torium. I was glad that they were in the other tent because I may not have been able to stand it.

Well we all slept well until about 6 am someone started screaming in the camp next to us. It was an older woman and at first I didn’t know what to think. Then I heard husband needs CPR and she was frantic. So I jumped out of my sleeping bag and thought I woke up Alison to come with me (she was actually awake, and wondering if she would be in danger if she ran toward the screaming, in Vegas that is actually a real issue).

As we ran out of the tent I saw the Park Service Policeman trying to find where she was because she had given bad directions. I originally thought I was dreaming about the police lights that passed the tent twice. I saw where she was and directed him to them. Alison and I ran in and she helped the wife and the officer and I started CPR. The man (Ray Lynn Hyatt) wasn’t looking good at that point if he was still alive. Then the volunteer paramedics arrived and took over. The officer and were there for about a minute before they arrived. Then I helped Alison to keep Linda (the wife) calm while they helped him.

Thank the Lord she was LDS. Nathan and my brother gave her a blessing of comfort and after that Alison did all the work of sticking with her and helping her out.

The paramedics and volunteer paramedics were able to get his heart going again but only under constant effort and after he had been without air for more than 20 minutes. Linda told then to taken him off the machine and let him pass after I gave him a blessing. That is maybe the oddest blessing that I have ever given. To a person that was going to die in moments.

The whole morning just made my head spin. In all honesty my head is spinning still now as I think about it. The back of my mind tells me that I could have done more and been there faster. I don’t know what to think. I don’t feel overall that I failed in anyway but I have been stirred up for sure since.

After that we helped Linda until her family came and took her home. Later when we were out hiking they came back and got her truck and trailer. Wow then that evening there was somebody that had no idea what happened camping there. That for me was when the weirdness hit. For Alison it was when we went to bed and she was thinking about Linda who didn’t have her husband to go to bed with. Wow.

Overall thought the weather, leaves and hiking was wonderful. It was even more fun with my siblings there. We drove through a tunnel that was 1.2 miles long and was the longest tunnel in America for quite a while. I believe it was built in the 1920’s. That is a cool tunnel. We did the Canyon Overlook Hike, and Hidden Canyon Hikes. Two of Alison’s favorite. So we did them for her birthday. That night we had brownies for her cake, and steak and Caesar Salad with biscuits, potatoes, and grilled chicken. It was lots of fun. Nathan and myself did lots of the cooking while Alison did most of the actual prep work before we came camping.

This night Zach went to sleep okay but woke up about 7 times, once each hour almost all night. It was really weird. We could not figure why but he would wake up screaming and kicking and thrashing all over. It would take forever to calm him down and then he would plop back to sleep. At the worst time he either kicked me of head butted me (I don’t remember which) and made my lip bleed a bit. I lost most patience and put him in his sleeping bag and he just fell asleep. Why didn’t I do that earlier?

The next morning Jenny, Nathan and I went and did Angels Landing. It is a serious trail that requires a 5 mile round trip and 1500 feet elevation change. We did it in about 3 hours. It would have been much faster if I wasn’t taking pictures. Jenny is good about that. Nathan went as high as he wanted to. He skipped the foolish part of climbing up the narrow saddle of death. Basically you’re scrambling over rocks for ½ mile while climbing about 400 feet and having a drop off of over 1000 feet on both sides. It is a lot of fun but actually if you think about it quite silly. At some points the neck you’re climbing gets as narrow as 20 feet. And sometimes it is very windy. The ironic thing of the hike was that it was not windy at all on top.

Later we went to an art gallery and did a few more hikes and fun stops before doing the Emerald Pools hikes. Those are amazing and usually have great fall colors, but this trip it was that Hidden Canyon that won the prize for coolest colors.

Maybe the best part of the trip was that Alison and I found a child carrier at Deseret Industries and bought it for 5 dollars it worked wonderfully after a 99 cent buckle and dusting off. Zach loved it. He was proud to be on my back as I did all the hiking and picture taking I wanted. Plus he fell asleep fast while in the seat. That was an unexpected benefit.

After a great trip we headed home and now face a few days later a mess resulting from the trip. Oh well. That is mainly because Alison is so good to help me with papers I had due for school. Anyway, that is the story of my trip. I am glad I went and took my beautiful wife to Zion. I hope that we can go again next year. That would be really nice.

Last Minute...

Talk about waiting for the last minute.  I have waited until the last day of the month to get my goal of 100 birds.  If I had a 100 to get it would be a long day.  Actually I need 3 more.  The day may actually turn out to be just as long...argh.

Well I have not all the possible ducks.  So I am going to my duck place and hopefully get my 100 and then enjoy a nice walk with my wife and kids...

Then I have to do about 50 other things...goals, goals, goals...

The Day and Some Introspection...

Well I have had another day, and more things to think about and process.  As any good day should present you I believe.

Today I had my class called Environmental Problem Solving.  It is a good class, talking about as the name implies Environmental Problems.  Well today we watched a video about the use of our natural resources.  It was called "Affluenza".  It presents to the viewer that problem that people over use overall and the earth really can't handle it.  It actually talked a lot more about how we over use resources and have so much at our disposal and we are less happy than we have ever been.  We actually may be at our worse in 100 years because of stress, and other problems.

That is an interesting problem.  Americans when polled said that they were their happiest in the 1950's, as compared to now.  That was done year by year.  Wow.  For myself I realize that I am not happy overall when I seek after possessions.

Do our possessions control us or do we control them?

We work so hard at getting ahead of the game and we really have nothing to show at the end of it all.  If you have to work 16 hours a day to accomplish your goal what does that get you?  Theodore Roosevelt in endorsing big business was worried what it would do to us.  He knew that the simple life was the best life.  He lived that and hoped others would as well.

It seems that the middle ground between poverty and wealth will bring us the most happiness.

The other thing that the video talked about was how much we use.  On average the American uses directly or indirectly on his behalf 20 tons of resources a year.  This is all the trash we produce, food we eat, gas we burn ecetera... That is 40,000 pounds.  Sounds a bit outlandish?  Consider this aspect of it...

How much gas do you use to fill you tank?  How many times a month?  How about for trips?  How about for the year, daily normal use and big trips?  For myself I am really a big user of gasoline for when I travel.  I ride my bike to work and school.  That helps actually by my calculation save 300 gallons a year.  Not only do I save money but that is almost 1 ton of resources right there.  Don't kid yourself into thinking that gas comes out pure for the ground.  It takes actually about 2 gallons of crude oil to produce 1 gallon of gas if that is the only thing they are making.  That is on a good day.  It could take a lot more.

Overall I probably use 1000 gallons of gas a year when I travel moderately.  Like this year.  That is adding up to at least 8000 pounds of resources right there if you don't count how much oil it takes to make gas.  So really next year when I travel twice as much I will probably add up to be over using past the 20 ton mark.

Then there is the trash and heating or cooling my house.  For me it is cooling the house 9 months a year.  They also have to use resources to keep my school library nice at 55 degrees.  That is a big building.  In the winter they keep it at 80.  Heating and cooling uses a lot of resources.

The point is that 20 tons of natural resource use per American isn't that outlandish.

So what am I going to do?  In the next year I will try and use less of the resources where I can, buy used and attempt to recycle 1000 pounds of my own trash.  To start I went out of my way to recycle my computer monitor that died.  That prevented lead and other heavy metals from being put into the landfills, as well as helping to reduce the waste overall.

That isn't the main thing I intended to write about but it became big.

A funny story about my day then I have to head to bed.

In my Environmental Problem Solving class there are a few students that go out of their way to help save insects, vermin and rodents.  For example Spiders and Mice.  Both people had them in their house.  What did they do?  They captured them, pampered them and relocated them.  The mouse story what the funniest.  She said she had a mouse problem and said she caught them and relocated them to the country side.  I said really?  I usually just drowned them when I was living out in the sticks.  97 in 3 weeks to be exact.  She said it was terrible that I did that.  Another guy in the room said you were dropping them off in front of his house were you?  I couldn't stop laughing, and neither could the rest of the group.  She had no idea what the joke was.

I also told them about the pest problem they were.  I guess she didn't realize how many there could by simple reproduction.  For example if you had 2 mice, that had 6 babies.  Those 6 babies mated and made 18, then assume some die, you get 36 after the next round, then 72, then 145, then 300, then 600, then 1200, then 2400, then 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 40,000, 80,000, 160,000, 320,000, 640,000, 1,280,000.  In less than 2 years you could have more than a million mice if you assume the babies can mate in a month and 1/2 of all the mice die each time and they have 6 babies.  Thank goodness they don't go that fast but killing 100 mice in a month may actually just about do nothing overall.  Argh.  Especially when your cats are really dumb about mice.

Douglas I never understood you...Zenger though was a good cat.

Things Keep Going...

Well things are going pretty well.  It has been a few days since I wrote to this online journal.  A few different things have happened lately and here are a few of them...

My computer monitor monitor an old CRT 19 inch stopped working on me.  It was kind of burdensome and took up a lot of room.  It was really nice to have a larger screen however to work with.  Anyway I was glad to now have the chance for getting a large less space intensive flat screen LCD.  I am thinking of a 22 inch monitor.  It is amazing to think that a 22 inch monitor is almost twice the size of my 19 inch and easily 3 times the size of my computer.  Samsung currently is making the best monitors in my price range.  I have seen a few that look quite nice but they lack the USB ports that some have that I would like for my USB mouse and keyboard.  That is a small thing but probably for my use will be important to consider for efficiency and sanity.

Lately my duaghter is adorable.  She is a people person.  As well Andy is a morning person.  She really likes to be unwrapped when I am up and about to she can wiggle after a good night sleep of being swaddled.  When she wakes up she is a doll.  She smiles and coos and wiggles with excitement at seeing me.  That is what will wrap me around her finger.  I just can't get over the fact that she is so small and dependent on me.  That astounds me everyday with both of my kids.  They get everything from us.  Wow.

Andy also had her heart check up today and she is showing both holes that were present closing dramatically.  We were worried that they wouldn't close and we would be needing direct surgery or intense medication to close them.  The lord has continued to work with her and she is proving to have little problems at all.  We are very blessed.  I can attest to that.

I have noticed how being in the same routine as parent and spouses can really wear you down just like a long trip.  Alison and I have a hard time some days when we get back together after a long day in our respective areas.  I have a hard day at school, she has a long day with the kids and menial tasks that never seem to end at home (a yammering 2 year old can really wear you down...).  When these happen on the same day it is hard to be cival with each other and remember you love each other.   Today we did get to actually talk for a few minutes after the kids were in bed and it was such a relief.  The hard thing is that my poor wife was exhausted and I had to tell her to lay down and sleep.  I am glad that we have each other.

Anyway, I think that for now that will be all I have.  I am tired and need to prepare myself for a day of substitute teaching tomorrow.  It isn't bad, you just need to be prepared.  I have done 5 so far, and have only about 50 to go.  If I can sub that many then we will be set for our summer of trips next year.  I am quite excited about that.  Anyway, I will write again soon...

Test Time...

Today I am spending part of my time studying for a test I have in my Contaminant Hydrology Class.  This is a midterm test, that is covering a lot of material.  The hard thing for me is that I have a hard time with just lectures.  Memorizing facts and the like is much harder for me.  If I can experience something and interact with it then I am generally much better at retaining that memory.

I guess the trick is to get to the point that I can interact with the information that I need to memorize.  At this point, 85 minutes before the test, the only thing a person can really do is be sure that the concepts you do know are clear and understood.

The real reason I want to do well with this test is that I want to succeed with my goal of getting a 4.0 for my entire masters.  So far I am half way there and possibly going to keep it going through my classes this semester.  We will see how I do.  The other problem with this test is that I haven't experienced the teachers test language yet.  Tests are much easier to prepare for if you know how a teacher phrases questions, not just the actual type of them.  That is why today is really going to be an adventure...

Website Update!

I have been able tonight to get to some easier problems and goals on my photo website and updates can now be seen.  Click here to see and enjoy...

I mainly have added a new gallery, and a rotating home page.  These aren't huge but seem so because of the work load with school I have been dealing with...so I am excited...

Included as well is a change of address on my blog for my photography site.  It is at this address now...

Enjoy!

Wow!

I decided that for my baby sisters birthday I would add a webpage to the internet in her name.  It was a process.  Every time I think that I have things down for something to do with the internet I am once again flamboozled.  Argh..Anyway it wasn't bad but with the time that I had it was hard and didn't come out quite how I had hoped.  Oh well.  See it here at www.jennycwilliams.com.

While I was at it, I also started another website that I was interested in.  It is the www.bookreviewers.com.  It is like the name says a website about book reviewing that my sister Jenny and I are interested in.  We are both book readers and want to expand and branch out to add more to ourselves and to other people.  Anyway things are good.

I went to a church meeting tonight and they talked about pornography and the trouble that comes with it.  The most striking quote that I got from it was "pornography is a plague that will cause a drought of the spirit in our live."  It is an evil that is more addicting than anything else that exists in this world.  We really have to fight against it with all our cunning powers and abilities.  To make the feild level so that we can conquer it we really have to add a big arsenal of tools to our side of the fight.  Without that we will be hopelessly out manned.

Before I forget I also went and worked today again as a substitute.  It was pretty fun, it was my second job of the year.  I hope actually to get about 50 jobs in total for the year.  We will see if I can do that.  If I do then we will be on our way to earning $30,000 for the year.  For me that would be a milestone.  We will see.  More money is more play!

It is a bit late however so I am going to end this post a bit early but with the note that things are well and I am excited about what I have ahead of me.

Deadlines...

So I am working today on my thesis proposal...this is a pressing thing that I have to deal with.  I need to get my proposal approved so I can start working on writing my final thesis and get ready to defend what I have found.

Well it is interesting that often you have to have the activation energy to get over a hump, to get started on something.  For me I had a terrible time getting this proposal going.  I finally got started and realized that I wasn't that bad off.

I am now about done and thank goodness I have a wonderful wife who will help me with things so I can get them done.  In this case she got me started and will save me because of her grammar skills.

That is what is going on today.  I am excited that I will have another milestone out of the way to graduating when I want...

Family Pride...

My son was taken by his mother the other day for a photo session at JC Penny. It was a free 8x10 deal so we decided to do it.

Alison had him all dressed up and ready to go except when they got there he wasn't ready to go. He was in fact quite adamant that he wouldn't sit on the box or smile. He was happy before and after the entire incident. Kids make you wonder.

Alison thinks that it was in fact his determination to respect me as his photographing father that kept him from letting the flattering light and cute girls take his picture. Oh well.

Time...

So it is interesting to look back and realize almost totally based on blog entries when I had time and when I didn't. Like back in July I had tons of time to be posting to my website and things like that, but I really didn't have much time in August or September thus far. Oh well things are going well.

My sister Jennifer and I are working on creating a website that is all about book reviews. I am excited about it and I hope that she is excited to. I am trying to figure the best format situation out and she is working on the review categories...so we will see. I am also trying to get things set up for add words and other things to help fund the site over all. So we will see what happens.

The good thing is that we have definitely got a lot of cool books to read. For me that is actually the exciting part.

That is all for now, I may post later if I have more time...har har!

Thesis and Work...

I have had a hard time getting back into the work and school routine since my daughters birth.  I did take about 2 weeks off to help my wife and get things in order for our transition to having two children.  That is a big change for me at least.  Getting back to work has been difficult.  I have no problem with running experiments and doing other lab work but my big problem is working on my thesis and thesis proposal.  I am having a total brain freeze when it comes to doing those things.

I think I will have to just do what my wife does and chase away the brain freeze and get the work going for myself.  She is really motivating to me.  Today I did succeed at working on it for the hour I had for it.  So I at a starting point.  For the rest of my day I have to get an experiment set up for testing tomorrow.  Then I will be able to come back and hopefully keep the flow going.

Other than the brain freeze on writing work is going well.  I think that I am actually about 60% or more done with my research and soon I can just hide out and write me thesis.  That is exciting to think that I am close to getting done.

I am also working this semester on a paper for publication looking at the influence of dairy farming on water quality in Phoenix.  That will be an interesting project.   It is a paper that I have been thinking about and it will start as a term paper for one of my classes using my data and others data and maybe it will turn out to be publishable quality and content.  We will see.

Butter...yum?

Okay here is yet another crazy thing my child has taken up.  This one is handled directly by Zachariah.  We were at a church dinner/party and he wasn't really excited about much of any of the food.  He was being a typical almost two year old.  When they brought dessert out he was an excited boy.  But that doesn't compare to what he had up his sleeve for his next move.

When the dessert was not fun any more he decide to see what was in the cute squares...they were of coarse butter.  Well we thought let him see what it is and the he will be all done with it.  That wasn't the case.  We opened it for him to see and he popped it right into his mouth.

Well one wasn't quite enough so let me tell you he was up to table opening more packets and just eating strait butter.  It was wild.  We stopped in at three servings of butter and he was pretty mad that we drew the line there.

I just honestly never know what to expect from my children.  They are amazing to say the least.  Maybe the funnest thing about them is that they will always change so fast on you.  About two weeks ago Zachariah completely changed the word set he had been using.  So now we don't know what any of the sounds he is making mean.  The joys of life.

They Know what they want!

Our daughter is now almost three weeks old.  I can hardly believe that it has gone so fast.  Her personality is already showing through big time.  Here is what she does that is just amazing to me.

Since she has been home about a week she has started to insist that we hold her when we are near.  By near I mean that she is able to tell that your close or by her.  They can't really see that well at first from what I can tell and from what I have read.  Despite this she really wants us to be close and hold her when she can tell we are by her.  When we aren't within a range that she can tell we are nearby she really doesn't have much care to be held in general.  This blows me away.  Already at 19 days old my daughter Andrea is vying for attention.

My children never cease to amaze me.

The other thing that my daughter has recently started to do is she will track with her eyes.  She will follow our voices and faces with he eyes, even struggling to move her little head to follow us further.

Again I must say I am quite amazed, even though I saw it all with my son Zach before.  Wow.  Being a parent is rewarding to say the least.

Graduation Destiny...

I have spent the day so far making my plan for graduation in May of 2008 with my masters degree in Water Resource Management from UNLV.  Well it may still be a perilous journey yet but I think that it will be possible for me to accomplish.  There are so any factors to deal with that many around me have given little faith in the possibility of it actually occurring.

Basically here is the time line that is before me.

The day of graduation is May 12th I believe.  The last finals are going to be taken on May 9th.  For me to get my masters I will need to complete my thesis.  To do this I will need to turn in my thesis by April 5th at the latest.  That has to be a finished accepted copy (accepted by my committee) with required revisions already made.  So to make revisions I need to know what they want changed.  So I will have to defend no later than March 5th so that after words I can make the needed changes and then be able to turn in a final copy by the deadline.  So this means that to defend my thesis by march fifth I need to have my thesis written and finalized by february 5th.  So that my committee can look through it and ask for changes to be make before defending.  So to basically be able to have my thesis written by then I will be needing to have all my research done and approved by about 3 months prior to to February 5th.  So by the  5th of November I needed to have my research done and finalized and accepted.  Today is August 3rd.  From today I have 3 months and 2 days to basically be done with all my research.

To finish my research I have to do another entire 3050B extraction which will take 1 week of my time (that is all my time for a week).  I have to still analyze again for selenium after that extraction which will take about 3 days.  I have to still analyze for arsenic 3 times which may take a week.  I still have two days of Scanning Electron Microscope work to complete.  1 more boron run at about 2 days of work.  3 more phosphorus runs at 1 week of work.  This is what I know I need to do for sure, and I may get quite a bit more to do as well.  This brings me up to a total of 5 weeks of work in the lab left to do in 12 weeks time.

Did I mention that I still need to take seven classes and support my family?  Well I am thinking that all things considered I will be able to be successful.  So far I am the #1 in my program for academics, but I may be tied with others, who may also have a 4.0 overall.  I have complained about the trouble of getting all my classes so that I can actually graduate so I won't even go there.

So overall currently, the goal of getting through with the masters degree by the end of 2 years is still in the possible category.  This is a good thing, and I am happy about life!

Have a great day!

The Ultimate...

I just finished my lunch which was very nice thank you.  I enjoyed it immensely.  So things are going along pretty well for now so I will spare you the details, I am basically working on my proposal and the AA.  I did dishes as well.

As I have been doing all this I was thinking to myself, self, what would be the best snacky food in the world?  Well you can guess what y mind and stomach were also thinking about.  I have applied my scientific mind to this problem and have decided that what the world needs is a snack that tastes like it is solid trans fats (they taste dang good believe me, I don't understand why people are so excited to be rid of them even bragging on their packaging about it), or even the next step the fatty molecule that tastes even better than trans fat.  Then you have it organic, zero calories and helps you to fly, blind folded.  This would be an awesome treat (I though maybe "sweet treat" but there are salt lovers out there...), this treat will also taste like what your craving as well no matter who is eating it at the time.  So for my office buddies it would be raw squid, for me good old salty chocolate with franks hot sauce and for you...whatever you want.  This would change the world.  It would be way better than ipods and incredibly addicting.  Maybe even more than spider solitaire.

Maybe the answer is in the next molecule that I was talking about, the one that tastes more awesome than trans fats, is taste able (only what you specifically crave at the time), not digestible and shoots through you like a laser beam, in a good way of course.  This would change the world.  I mean this would probably be a problem with causing starvation but who cares, we could add it to sprouts and broccoli and adults and kids the world over would be eating their greens, we could even make tofu ultimately desirable.  This I believe is the answer that we have been looking for.  The one true way that the world can be saved.  We could start living of off dirt, just through some of this little molecule on there and it will make it edible.  I think I will name this molecule the edible-"izer."

So that is what I have on my mind today.  It doesn't help that my office friends next store eat homemade authentic Chinese food everyday.  I mean the smell alone drives me nutters.  Its a lucky thing that all the sweet Asian food stores/restaurants are far away, and that my wife busts out some sweet action cooking of her own.

Well sorry for the random thoughts, but until next time think about the edible-"izer!"

Running Man!

Well I have finally started jogging again. I think that I am not really running, I a taking my time so I am thinking that I fall into the jogging category. It is nice. I am trying to usually go at 5am. This is about the only time of day that is doable for running. It is also the best time for the family because I a not neglecting them buy running out for 30-45 minutes.

Anyway I feel quite a bit sorer but I actually feel nice the whole day after I work out. I know that I would feel great, but I really have to actually get back into it and do the work. That is how life goes.

I think that I am mainly running so that when my sister asks if I went running I can tell her that I did actually go. Funny that that is the motivation to get out and better myself. The other reason is that Alison and I both want to be in better shape and have set a goal to be in better shape by the end of the year. We each have different goals obviously but hey we are different people.

That last reason that I have started to work out again is to prepare for backpacking trips next year. I hope to do 3 or 4 different trips and I will be much cozier and happy on those trips if I am in shape. One trip is a 93 mile trip that climbs more than 40,000 through the entire trip (that is if you add all the elevations gained up cumulatively). That will be a real thigh burner to be sure. So I want to be prepared to doe those trips and feel like superman rather than super slug on a salt patch.

Not to mention all the backpack trips, I also want to try and summit a few peaks as well next summer. Those will be mostly 1 day trips and non mountaineering but still being in shape will make a big difference.

So I am trying to get into shape and we will see if I can move the streak to something longer than 2 days. So far I feel great. Anyway, that is what is up with me lately.

Fixing Things

So a machine that I use at work is called an Atomic Absorber. This fancy piece of junk looks at how much of an element is present in a sample. It heats things up and does all kinds of fun things and has to have a coolant system to keep everything going. Well the hoses started leaking all over the place.

I called the company up that makes the machine and they said they could get me some new hoses for about 400 dollars. What a joke. Hose is hose as long as it matches. Well I went to the hydralic hose place for Vegas and got the hoses custom made for 90 dollars. I also got them done in 1 hour of my time driving around. This was a relief, but really what do those people think is going on, a hose shortage?

Oh well that is my adventure for the week. I will see if I can get the machine up and running again, I hope that this is my only problem that I have to face with this machine. It gave my lab partner a terrible time when she was working it for her project. It wasted months of her time, I hope I can learn from her trouble and escape essentially unscathed.

Graduate School

Can I say that school sometimes can be incredibly aggravating? I am trying to work on my masters degree here at UNLV. For me it is not only research but classes as well. I have to have 33 total credits to graduate. Well that wouldn't be difficult at all, except for the fact that each semester all graduate classes are taught during the tie frame of 5 to 7pm on Monday through Thursday. This means that we end up with an option of being able to take only 2 courses. This adds up to only 24 credits possible in two years. Not to mention that we need a variety of classes as well. You need to have several classes from different subjects and some semesters subjects just aren't taught. This makes it impossible for the student to get the 3 science, 3 policy, and 3 elective classes they need. Argh.

The reality is that education should be focused on helping students, not on being a cover for researches who do little research and even less teaching. I shouldn't cry to much about this but the reality is that a masters should take about 2 years, not 3 or 4. Especially when you want to move on to education on a higher level. How am I going to ever get to the point of where I can be a crappy teacher and screw up students careers to unless I get some help. Har har...

Well I guess that you can guess that I have just registered for classes. I will be quite unhappy if I have to leave Las Vegas later than I desire because I couldn't get classes that I needed. Oh well. Time will lead us where we need to be...

Things Work Sometimes...

I am glad that I can finally write to my blog strait from my email.  What a relief.  Sometimes it takes a bit of work to get logged in and then that is all the time I have.

Things are going well for us.  We thought that yesterday we would have our baby finally after they checked the lungs.  Well it turns out that the lungs weren't developed like the doctor thought they would be so we are back to the waiting game until the baby comes or wait for  2 week and then we will induce then.  What a saga.

The hardest thing about the baby not coming this soon was that we have basically had Christmas put off for 2 weeks in a way...Argh!  I guess that is life.

I also had fun yesterday with the video camera that my parents let me borrow.  That is so fun.  I tape Zach my almost 2 year doing everything.  He especially loves to watch videos of himself!  He actually sat on my lap and watched videos for at least 10 minutes.  That is amazing if you know him.  He has no interest in anything to do with TV so far in his life.  So this is pretty funny to see finally.

The last things of interest is that we are noticing with Zach that he hates going to bed at night but will take naps just fine...we have two theories.  They are these;

Zach just doesn't want to stop playing and fun things and so tries to delay us.

The other idea we have is that he is doesn't like it because I usually am not present when he gets up in the morning.  That was Alison's idea and I may agree because he is visibly the most happy and content when he has us both there.

Well that is life today...I just finished all my monthly bills and now am off to do some work...

Enjoy

This is a Test!

Well I am trying to see if I can post to my blog through email without having their adds show up...so here it goes.

A day in the valley...

We are now in Ruby Valley for the second day. Wow it has been quite the last day or so. We decided that last night after our hay ride through the fields of the Neff Ranch we would go in for a movie in town and pick up the new Harry Potter book...Well the movie we say was Transformers, which was a pretty cool movie. Seeing a movie in Elko rather than Vegas sames about 7 dollars. So the movie was worth it and I had fun with Sam and Ben Neff and my sister Melissa.

After the movie we went to Walmart and got the new Harry Potter book and had fun on the way home talking about the book again especially what we expect and about the culture that has developed around this series of books. Anyway I am not going to read the book until I am driving home with my wife. We do sometimes read books together and both look forward to this book to read slowly and discuss what we think is going on.

Well the fun of the day started when I got home at 2:30 am and went to bed after being up since 5 am. Zach at about 3 am today decided that he could sleep because he didn't eat any of his dinner or much lunch at all. Well we tried to get him back to sleep and other things and then finally fed him and he was ready to get up and play at about 3:45. This was not what we wanted and so tried to get him to go back to sleep. Well he was furious about the idea of getting back to bed. So I had to hold him and get him to calm down and be a bit happier and then he went to his bed and fell asleep after screaming and then crying for about 15 minutes. By this time it was 5:15 am. So this was not boding well because I was going to go to the refuge this morning at about 5:30.

So at 6:15 I got out of bed and headed to the refuge with my sister Jenny. We were trying to get 3 birds for our year lists, the Glossy Ibis, Black Tern, and Horned Grebe. We got all but the Black Tern, which I thought would be a snap. Well we went all over the Ruby Valley National Wildlife Refuge and didn't get a hint of a look. Oh well. With the other two birds I broke my record from last year which was 271. I am now at 272 and hope that I can get to 300 before the end of the year. I have 5 1/2 months left to get 28 species. Well that may be seemingly easy but with not much travel left for the year 28 more is a pretty high task. So we will see.

Well after that we went and played games and treasure hunts at Brighams and have had a great time so far. Tonight our update and talent show and then I may get some sleep...

Final Harry Potter Predictions

So I guess the book has now come out and I have my own copy so before I open it and not close it until I am done I will give a few final thoughts. Anyway here I go.

Harry’s eyes will play a big role. He has his mothers eyes and they will open up something for him that will aid him in a great way. I won’t predict how other than his eyes will aid him at least at Godrics Hollow. The place where his parents died. They may be a greater help to him elsewhere. Possibly at the deathly hollows.

I think that the deathly hollows will also turn out to be a place that Voldemort kind of has as his comfort zone where he hordes whatever grossities he surrounds himself with. I am not exactly sure about what to expect here…but maybe Harry and Voldemort will end up wrestling at the end wandless…

I guess about the last thing that I am going to predict is that Harry will not actually murder Voldemort but he will arrainge somehow Voldemort's demise. I predict that he will actually die at the hand of one of his servants, or creatures. I think that there is a good chance that the dementors will turn on him and he will go to repel them and he will have a Fred and George Joke shop wand switched to him and he will die that way. That is far out and all but she doesn’t really give a lot of information on what will specifically occur. I believe that this is about what will happen. Anyway, that is all. I am going to go and read the book…

I hope that you enjoy it as well if you’re a fan, if not give it a read and maybe you’ll enjoy it!

Ruby Valley

Well I am here in Ruby Valley with family. Finally. I am so glad that we have been able to come out for our family reunion. I realized that we haven't been back for about a year and a lot of things have not really changed, and somethings especially like the people have grown and done different things.

Anyway, things are going well for a great weekend. The first thing we saw after getting out of the car was Aunt Kathys cats. Fortunately for Zach they have been trained on being around kids. He loved them and actually petted them gently. Then he was having a great time with them and wanted them to play catch with the basketball. They didn't like that and scattered.

This whole afternoon and evening things have been exciting for Zach. He has loved exploring all the things that are new for him here in and outside the house. I think the biggest hit of all we have had today was the trampoline. Zach loved it. He especially wanted me to chase him around the trampoline. He would get himself put on and then order me on as well. He is getting to the point in life where he likes to have things a certian way and place. This I discovered is not only with inaminate objects (this is a big area for certain he often gets very disgruntled with he can't make things right and gets frustrated and we have to separate him for what is frustrating him) but really with people as well.

Anyway that is all for now, I will give my final predictions for the upcoming book and what our weekend is up to!

Harry Potter and Deathly Hollows Predictions

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Predictions
By Chris Williams

Well there is a lot of predictions out there about how Harry Potter will end up with this last book being quite the finally. So I am posting a few predictions of my own to just clarify that I believe certain things will occur. This is to primarily avoid the I knew that was going to happen statement that we all hear after we the book. Looking back we all “knew it was going to happen”…

So basically here are a few of my thoughts and ideas about what occur. This is based on things that the author herself has said will happen in the book, and from reading the first six books and noticing patterns of for shadowing that she does often follow (though of course not all the time).

First of all I want to state that I will state things I believe will occur as an either or, this is primarily because she had written the books so skillfully that she can really take us anywhere she wants, and has given us very little to know what will actually happen. So along with this, what I am writing is my own conjecture to be sure. My wife doesn’t even agree with me on some things. So I am going to say this or this will occur “I believe.” I will attempt to go from big to small.

Okay for overall general ending I am going to put out the idea that Voldemort will be destroyed. This will come in a finality by Harry’s doing but with a huge amount of help being contributed by (these people I really think will play a big part even if it is a small way in helping Harry’s goal being realized) Hermione, Ron, Ginny, Nevil, Percy, Wormtail, Draco, Snape, the Weasly twins, Lupin and Mr. and Mrs. Weasly. He will get lots of help from other people, but these are all people that I think will play a part in Harry’s success in a way that is more than just presence to be sure. Some may sacrifice themselves, some may give knowledge that saves Harry’s life.

Now it has been stated by Rowling’s that 2 people will die that are main characters. I am going to say that she doesn’t actually mean Voldemort and only one other person. I think that we will sadly see 2 more than Voldemort. Prime candidates that I think will be on this list are; Ginny, Snape, Draco, Mrs. Weasly, the Weasly twins (I am going to predict both or none, though only one would be quite heartbreaking, so that might happen) and Harry. I think that the top three to possibly snuff it will be Harry or Ginny, Mrs. Weasly and Snape. That is my take on those. Depending on who dies as how I really think that could determine the direction that we are going. Given that she has began a writing style that is leaning toward tragedy I think the actor of Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe, should be pretty worried. He may not make it at all. If he does make it, I submit that he will be permanently scarred with more than the lightning bolt scar, he will be a broken person much like Frodo in the J.R.R. Tolkien series of books not able to lead a full life after accomplishing his quest always plagued by nightmares and memories on a very real level.

Okay about the Horcruxes, we are told that there are about 4 more to get rid of for sure. We have also been told that one of them is actually at Hogwarts (the author let this slip I believe). I think that the list of these that may exist at Hogwarts is a short one. First of all in an interview she stated that we have all ready come across a Horcrux in one of the previous books at Hogwarts. I will give my following guesses; the trophy given for acts of heroism to the school Voldemort received in framing Hagrid is one (what better place for things to never be thrown away and watched over by Filch with all loving care), the sorting hat is two but less likely, and maybe the sword of Gryffindor. I think that the Trophy is probably our best bet thus far. It was around when both Harry and Voldemort were and so one.

Okay about horcruxes. This is obviously a big focus of the book. Harry is going to have to get some major knowledge about these from somewhere or he is toast. I think that he will get information from Snape (not willingly at first of course), Dumbledore (in some way Dumbledore will have devised to give knowledge after his planned death) and the department of mysteries. We as readers don’t even know how they work, like forming and destruction mainly. So there is a lot to learn there.

Dumbledore is dead. The author has stated that he is not going to come back to life or that he is secretly alive somehow. I do believe that being so clever he has several things left behind that are intentionally going to be quite helpful to those fighting Voldemort. I don’t really have much speculation on how he will do this. Anyway, I think Faux will play a part in it though, and his painting in the headmasters office.

As far as where the book will take place…I think that Harry will return to school at Hogwarts for at least a short time. He will likely have a wild summer and breaks during school to be sure and then as usual after he finishes school he will have a big adventure to the deathly hollows. How else will he get the last horcrux if he doesn’t go back to Hogwarts? Besides, the story is based on a framework of occurring primarily at the school, and I think there will be a big part of the story there still as well. On this though we will see.

This is all for now. I will post a part two to finish my predictions…

Websites and Other Things

I am working on my family website lately as well as my business website. This has been quite the project to be sure. I have become quite the designer and programmer. Things that I would never have thought of myself before recent times. I am glad that I am able to build by skill set continually though wherever I end up. I actually really enjoy build web pages and sites. This is something that I never would have thought possible of myself a year ago. If I had known what I could do I would have done it sooner. I think that probably goes for many things in my life and many other peoples. We can a lot more than we let ourselves believe, or allow ourselves to accomplish (it is funny what work can accomplish if you actually do it and a lot of it).

I am so excited to go back to ruby valley. Things are just humming in my little brain. I want to do so much while I am there but only have a little bit of time. I think that I will try and live there again next summer. I think I may be able to get somewhere to live if I am lucky...

Lately I have realized a problem that I possess. I really am not career oriented at all. I will say that I am talented in many areas, but I often have little desire to focus on any one thing for a long period of time. Maybe (hopefully) this isn't a new phenomena seen only in myself. Well anyway, I like work and lots of it, but I sometimes think that I like doing what other people tell me to do so I can wonder after hours (body and spirit) and not have to worry about what would be needed if I had to generate and do all the work needed to feed my family.

Well that is all for now, I am going to head home and wrestle a 24 pounder who has a lot of energy!

Children...

Well we are currently on the verge having our second child. I have said a bit about her before. She has a heart that hasn't formed totally correct. What this means is...well we know for sure that this means we are going to have to watch very closely after she is born to be sure that her heart will support her.

So after she is born she is going to go strait to the baby intensive care unit for monitoring. If there are problems then she will be ready for surgery or whatever may be needed right away. So things are looking up for her survival if she does have problems. What blows me away is that 15 years ago we would have hardly noticed that a problem was there. Now we are prepared to solve any problems that may come our way. I am wowed every day...

So on this note we are excited and relieved. The ironic thing is that our son, Zachariah, really has no idea that we are going to be adding another person to our family. All the while though he has grown very close to us in the last month. He is very aware when both his parents are home and has started running up to us climbing into our laps if we don't pick him right up and giving us hugs and then just off to play again. This amazes me. It is likely just the stage in life he is in but wow.

Anyway, things are looking good. I am excited to see what happens in our inner family workings when the daughter is added. Everything we do will change and resettle into new patterns and ideas. The future is quite exciting.

Hummingbird!

Well over the last few days I was at home and hanging out for the 4th of July. It was so nice to be around my wife and son and soon to be daughter (she is quite active and moves so much that I see the belly churn on a regular basis). Anyway, on one day after we had cleaned up the house and were taking a breather we made some snow cones. As always when we have a treat Zach just comes up and sits in our laps and goes back a forth between us for tastes of what we have. If we would let him he would sit in the bowl of whatever it be.

Anyway so after he had a large portion of the snow cone he was very excited and started running around and giggling. Like non stop for several minutes. He was definitely on a sugar buzz. It was hilarious. I can see how hummingbirds do it. Then he came up and wanted more. Since then he also begs mercilessly for the green stuff that he sees in the fridge that we made the cones with. He definitely is getting to know the contents of our own fridge down to what he wants and doesn't want.

Jobs...

Well today I had what may have been my first interview in years for a job. I applied to become a substitute teacher in the school district down here and had the interview today. It went well, it seemed that after about 5 minutes I was "in" and we basically chatted after that. At one point she asked if I just wanted to get a permanent Job teaching a science at the high school level, of course that would take time but was what she thought I should do.

I was worried that I would be much less qualified than they wanted and well I impressed I guess. I am excited though after the interview to go into the classroom. I think that I may even go for a position that would be long term if it came up. That would be alot of fun, plus really good experience. Anyway, I have had a good day and am going to get back into the lab to get some stuff ready for experiments that I want to run this week.

I think that my good day is getting better because my wife made me a wonderful lunch. The best part was the home made bread that just made that turkey sandwhich heavenly. Wow I am lucky to have her as my mate!

Daily Grind

Well I am back from a few day vacation/break to Provo to visit and hang out with family. It was lots of fun and actually rejuvinating. I sometimes get pretty ragged when visiting family because being family you are drawn to the quarrels and struggles that are at home when you visit. This trip wasn't to bad, but kind of was rushed on use because we only had a certain time we could go. Oh well. I think that I hung out with my brother in Vegas before we went to Provo enough to get my home fix before we went, that is why I was grumpy when I finally got to Provo.

Being back home (temporary home to be sure) I was glad to be back at work. I think that I am a borderline workaholic at least in the fact that I hate seeing projects go undone. So I am glad to be back working on my projects and in a routine. I am as bad as my toddler in that I need a routine to stay happy and productive. I realize this over and over again in the daily things that I get to do. When I get out of a routine I feel like my life in falling apart. I wonder why I fight the routine so hard, especially getting back into it. Anyway.

Today when I got home my son gave me a run through of his new work, which is Hi. He will say it about 20 times because it gets such a reaction. He also says it sometimes when he wants our attention. One time he was pulling my pants leg and say Hi, Hi...The best part is right now at least he can only say that with a smile. Wonderful times today as a parent.

Runny Mouth!

Well my child is not feeling well. We decided earlier this week to not travel to Kings and Sequoia National Parks. It is a good thing that we did decide this because my son is now running all over. Not with his legs (he still does that), but with his cute little nose. I got home from work and he looked soaked. Totally wet, his entire shirt. Well his mouth and nose are going like a faucet. Not a slow link anymore...Wow.

I believe we changed his shirt 3 times and each was totally soaked again. I am blown away. I guess that molars coming in, runny nose and a cold are all the boy needs to wipe out his shirts and anyone that dares to hold him.

Amazing!

Vacation

Well we just returned from camping at the Grand Canyon and outside of Zion. It was lots of fun. We met up with Alison's parents and sister and Zach was spoiled rotten in just 3 days.

Zach was in heaven. It seems that they brought lots of extra cookies just for the little boy to eat and be wowed with. He was schmoozing it up for them to be sure. From his point of view the time we were out there was heaven. He had dirt, rocks, sticks, sand, pots and pans, cookies and of course grandma and grandpa to make it all available for him at his whim. What a life for a 19 month old.

We had a lot of fun as well. The area of the Grand Canyon was called Tuweep that we visited. It is about 65 miles away from the highway via a dirt road. It was quite the journey. I would have to say the most extensive off road trip our poor luxury sedan has been on. Fortunately only 6 miles were technical driving. Some spots even a jeep would have to be careful. We did receive stares of at least moderate admiration for the cars getting in to where we were.

The first day was terribly windy. Wow it was insane. Probably averaging about 50 mph and maxing out with gusts of 70 mph or more. Setting up the tent was an adventure. I was sad that we didn't have our mountaineering tent that is convenient to set up in bad weather. We were blessed though that the wind was only bad for one day. The second day was beautiful. After that we headed up to Zion and to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. Alison's parents hadn't been to Zion before and they definitely enjoyed the afternoon that we had there to hike and relax.

As is typical our child wanted to jump in the river, so we let him. He is a typical kid that unfortunately has parents that may give him a bit to much freedom to play. He had a lot of fun. The entire time in the river he followed his aunt Kaisha around an was so proud of himself.

The rest of the trip was fun and pretty uneventful. We went out of our way for Zach to have the sand dunes to play at and typical of him he wanted to play on the ramp up to the viewing area. Argh. He did have a lot of fun in the sand once his grandma got him remembering what it was all about.

Well that is what we have been up to the last week. Doctors appointments for our daughter are getting routine which may be a bad thing. However they tell us for her situation everything is continually looking better than worse. So we are blessed and happy about that.

That is all for tonight. I need to get better at a more regular pattern of posting. Night time seems to be the best for me. This is what I will shoot for...

Summer Games

It seems that with summer you have the ever present games that come with it. For me one of those is baseball. Tonight we went outside and let Zach play around on the grass and sidewalk and as well with the little kids that were down there.

One of the kids who was older (his name is Elijah, and yes all the kids were black kids which I think is totally awesome, I didn't grow up around kids of any different ethnicity from my own) was hitting the old ball around with a bat. It was fun to see a 7 year old playing the game that I played for 10 years of my own life.

From the perspective of adult and now person looking back at my own experience at that age he was doing it all wrong. I didn't want to teach him to hit well enough to break my car windows, but well I couldn't stand to see him suffer so many misses. He was trying to maul the ball with his swings and his footing was all over the place. So I showed him how to do it better and well he did it better. Hit my kid, car and nailed a window. Luckily he is still a small kid and the one that got Zach was innocuous, and well the window was lucky to not have been broken.

I think that it is a law of nature that when a kid hits a ball around with a bat that the ball will hit a window or something that just doesn't need to be hit. Oh well.

Zach had a lot of fun down there, he got to watch the bigger kids do their thing...He is really a lot like myself. I am a sit back and watch the crowd and other people type person. I am shy but only initially, and Zach is shaping up to be like myself. I guess I am his father and he is around me all the time. He is shaping up to be a lot like us (he is even showing to have the same growth patterns that I did. He is hitting a big growth spurt at the same time that I did (18 months)).

Alison went to the doctors again today and everything is going well. So good times there. I went to work and got my project moving a bit more forward again after we had so many appointments last week (8, this week we are up to 4).

I am as well getting close to publishing the website that has been to long in the making. Oh well. That is life, things are definitely going well for us.

Jumping and Rolling

Well after a day of traveling to appointments for Alison and helping the missionaries we were totally beat. This coincides perfectly with a time that our son Zach will have boundless energy. It doesn't help things that he got to play with his little friend (they seem to mutually gain large amounts of energy from each other and carry it even after they part for hours) Tanner Hemming (his parents are our friends, ironically we are all brought together by our children and now we probably could care less if our kids were same age or playmates) twice.

He was trying this afternoon and evening to Jump. He is still learning how to do that. It is something he considers pretty cool. I guess there is not really a way to teach it, you just have to do it. He probably isn't strong enough yet but soon he will be jumping all over the place (just the other day he jumped off the high chair and got a bloody lip and nose, I wasn't watching but really I can't catch him every time (says the bad father).

He has learned to do somersaults. He carefully gets himself into position and then after a few efforts will push himself into doing it, or commit himself to the point that his scareddy cat side (which he got from me I am sure) can't resist gravity any more and he will roll over. He will usually do this several times then go play with something else and come back and do it again.

To add to his new tricks he is growing into the firstborn roll and trying to do things that impress us and test us at the same time. He will let us tickle his chin forever it seems but will also make us physically remove him from something he needs to not be doing again and again. Argh and sigh, I do enjoy being a parent. It would just be easier if I didn't need to help him leave the caveman mentality behind. I guess I am really just a social reformist underneath it all when it comes to my child. Ha Ha.

Update on the Baby Girl...

So the latest news is that the baby isn't yet born so I should refer to her as the future baby girl...

Regardless, today we went for another check-up and found that the state of her heart is going really well. So well that we we told by the fetal cardiologist specialist that we only need to see him every two weeks instead of weekly. Exciting for us. For me as well because monitoring is very routine and I can go to work or tend Zach rather than going to those appointments as well.

At least we thought. Today the babies heart rate was all over the place in bad ways (ranging from 60 to 130 beats per minute). This may have been stress or just her rolling around all the time at the wrong times. Alison as well was having small but consistent contractions. So we got sent to the hospital after 20 minutes of monitoring for 4 hours additional to be sure that nothing was really wrong.

This was stressful because we had to drive across town and then check in Alison at the hospital and I had to leave her and get Zach from the sitter who was planning on only about 2 hours. Long story short, I stressed, Alison stressed but was then relaxed and then she was done and I wasn't stressed anymore and we came home and all was well.

She does have to go on a medication that stops contractions, for obvious reasons, but all else was basically a non worry eventful day in the end. Wow.

So another day of appointments come and gone and we are still doing well. Parents of one toddler and a baby brimming with excitement to get out. Ironically she is already getting us all knackered out. This is what parenthood is all about...

Baby Names

Okay so the last post was kind of depressing or overwhelming. This is not to bad, we really feel okay about what is going on and what will happen in our future.

So we have been thinking about baby names. We love to think about baby names to be honest. We love calling our daughter different names every day. Doing this overall we end up with a good idea what names we really like over the 9 months. With Zach we thought Alexander, Zachariah, and Abram as top names. I was leaning towards Abram and well when we saw him and met him we decided he was a Zachariah to be sure. It was lots of fun. It almost seems that we have more fun with playing around with names than any other aspect of the pregnancy.

So for our daughter I like the following names (I think that Alison likes some of the same as well, some on this list are her alone some days...);

Abigale
Kaitlin
Catherine
Katie
Alexandria
Andrea
Emma
Emilee
Shaharizod (okay all me)
Nichole

Well those are the ones that come to my mind most readily, and I think that today the three favorite are

Andrea (what I would name her today), Catherine, Kaitlin

I think that today Alison may like Andrea the best, but she is still toying with lots of new names as she comes across them. I love considering new names for girls as well so we will see what happens when she is born...

Our Daughter...

We found out about 3 weeks since we found out that our daughter had a heart issue. Well here is about what happened looking back on 3 exciting, disappointing and relieving weeks.

Well here are the details about what we know. First of all we are going to have a girl. We said many times that we decided to wait to find out the baby's gender until it was born. Well we were in a routine appointment for a checkup and they listened to her heart. It was about 2% slower than normal and they said go and see a specialist to be sure everything is okay. We said sure since our insurance will pay for everything anyway. And because we figured that it was no big deal at all.

At the specialist (sadly I wasn't there because we thought nothing of it) they said things like we can't find this part of the heart and where is such and such. Ali was overwhelmed and stressed. They also sent her to the best fetal cardiologist in the west (nicely, also in Las Vegas) the same day, asap (getting appointments with this guy is a priority situation only). He said you are okay for today, but come back in 3 days and we will take a much closer look at things on a better machine, which is at a different office (he has 5 offices that we can tell, he goes around to each to accommodate the most people possible, ironically making it hard for us each time we have met with him).

So I went with her to the follow up specialist specialist appointment. At that appointment we found out several things. First of all a bit of background. If you don't know, your bodies heart is made of 4 chambers. It is also broken up into a left half and right half. Both halves take in blood that is oxygen depleted from veins, and pushes out from 2 arteries blood oxygen enriched. Well for our daughter she is lacking the blood returning section in her right side, so at best she is running at 60% return to the heart. She also lacks the Lower Venecava which is an intake area for the right side. This is kind of bad news, but if she makes it to birth she will likely live a life like any other child and never know the difference (you could say she would do everything almost half heartedly, kind of funny but not I guess).

The most serious problem she actually faces is that the Foramenal Valley is much smaller than it needs to be. Usually this is 8-10mm and in her it is 2mm. This is essentially a hole in the middle of the heart in an area that divides the heart into two. What this does is allow breathing through the umbilical cord. After she is born it will close and she will breath through her lungs. If it closes she will slowly suffocate inside Alison. So this means that we have to watch very carefully to be sure that it maintains at least the constant size it is at. If it decreases we will take steps to deliver her early. So to watch it we have to go to the doctor three times a week.

So far after 4 check ups we have seen the Foramenal Valley stay constant in size. If it stays constant then she will be delivered normally and likely have few if any problems. I will be honest however that her chance of survival to birth isn't 100%. She has many obstacles to overcome and things to do before we can really breathe easy (no pun intended). At this point she could very easily die in a multitudinous number of ways (luckily these are things that probably won't happen, and aren't things that regularly happen). I personally am preparing for things that hopefully we won't have to do or deal with but may have to. Alison isn't worrying about those things because it would likely cause her more stress than is needed. Regardless, our and our daughters outlook is very good.

We have prayed and I have fasted (obviously Alison can't) and we feel good about things. I don't know that we feel that things will be okay for sure, but we feel totally confident in dealing with and accepting whatever the Lord sends our way. However the ball rolls we will be prepared for what comes our way. The nice thing is that both of our families have felt the same thing as well. This is really comforting, especially because we don't feel like we have a false sense of security.

Well that is the background of what is going on with our daughters development. I will keep all posted.

A Disappointing Tragedy - A Month Later

A month ago more than 30 people we killed on the Virginia Tech Campus. It seems that we have simply moved on. I really understand the feeling of the VA faculty and students wanting to be left alone so they can work out the terrible thing that happened. For the rest of the nation I believe that we should not forget. I will not be one to say what we should do but it seems that we try and deal with these things by just forgetting.

These problems will always resurface in one form or another because people allow themselves to think that their problems are due to other peoples actions. We like to blame others for what isn't going well for us. We are so accustomed to not taking our own responsibility that we will let things grow in magnitude on us as we shirk them continually. I believe that this was one problem likely faced by the killer. I feel so bad for him that he didn't consider that maybe there was a different solution that would if anything benefit him alone.

I hope that we can grow from this tragedy in ways that will benefit everyone, if only by benefiting ourselves.

Work and Slavery

I have been trying to plan for the next year here in Vegas, mainly concerning our budget. We have been running things on 1500 a month plus a few sub jobs by Alison that pad the budget. Well I asked my boss to turn me into a full time player from part time over the summer so that we could save for later when we won't have the option of Alison doing the sub job.

My boss said that he wouldn't make the change for me. His reason was basically that I wouldn't possibly be able to save any money because (I don't really know what his reason is) I supposedely wouldn't save anything. He said that you will spend whatever you get and so getting more to save for later would basically do no good because later when you get less you will go into shock. I am pretty disgruntled over this because he is not giving me the money for work I will be doing so he can keep his own salary padded long after the project is done with. It also is boiling down to the fact that he expects me to work full-time and more for only part time pay. Why should he pay more I will do the work anyway. I guess he assumes that I will be resourceful so that I won't starve while working. This is the way things go I guess. This is a situation that I will basically have to bend over and take.

I think that overall I am most distraut because I am being taken advantage of. That drives me nuts more than anything else. Arggh.

Besides the money, the good news is that I will be able to probably get all my research done so that in the fall and spring I will be able to just doing something else besides research to supplement the income. So basically I can earn myself more time for later when it might be able to pay. I just like everyone want the payoff now however. Oh well.

This is really not that big of deal in the short term round of things but for me it is another thing to worry about on the pile of things in life. We found out our child that is soon to be born is facing a serious heart problem that could result in her dying before she is ever born. This means that we will have to go to the doctor several times a week to check on things among other things. I will write a total blog about this later but basically I was hoping for a small thing to bouy us up during this slightly depressing time (We have moved on and are looking toward the future, no use in rotting in the past).

Anyway that is all for now...

Sampling Trip Success

Wow, the days go by fast when you have lots of work to do.

I had a good week of sample collecting in Phoenix with my professor. It seems like a week but actually was only 3 days, or about 54 hours. Anyway. It actually rained while we were there but that didn't affect the sample collecting. We collected samples from 9 sites. And now I have 27 bottles of samples to analyze. That is a pretty lengthly process. Here are the first few stages that I am beginning to do now that I am back in town...

I am separating the water from the dirt by centrifuging the samples. This gets most of the water out, it is still mud but drier. After that I acidify the water so that it will not grow anything (add acid until it is pH of 1.5ish). That sounds simple but we collected sample in large bottles because I need a lot for all the different experiments that I am going to do and so I have to move them from large to small bottles. This gets more complicated because I have to use new gloves, spoon and everything else each time I move because I want no cross contamination. This leads to more dish doing and preparation to just do this first step of my sample preparation. Well anyway it is fun and after two days of work (about 9 hours, because I still have school work to do as well) I now have 1/3 of the samples drying.

Anyway things are looking good for the Lab work to be getting down around the time our second child is born. That is going to be a big deal in a small package that I hope to give full attention to.

All the while Zachariah is now developing a picky eating habit. This is the 18 month old that went from eating 2 cups of oatmeal a day as well as a few eggs for breakfast down to half a peanut butter sandwich a few bites of enchiladas and half an egg for the whole day. I guess he will eat when he is hungry.

Well that is about all that is running to mind today, I am going to shove off and head home for my favorite part of the day, the walk. That is sure relaxing to get out and walk and talk to my lover and kid.

Have fun and enjoy,

Chris

Pre Sampling Jitters

Well I am about to head out on my sampling trip for my research project. I have been trying to get schedules and permits set up for 9 months and now we are about to head out. I am actually quite excited. Anyway things are well. I will get to spend some real quality time with my adviser all the way to Phoenix.

The trip is pretty simple. We are going to go and collect dirt samples which I will learn to love a lot before I finally graduate. This is a big step in me getting done and actually being able to graduate on time next May.

I will update on how things are going when I can in the next few days.

Anyhow, now is the time for me to go and load up the truck for us to leave on time...

Monday, April 16, 2007

Well what a day. I am surprised that time goes by so fast. So much for once a week on the posting. I have quickly gone to a month. Argh.

This picture represents alot of what I did all summer long to get the opportunity to easily photograph all summer long in such a wonderful and beautiful place.

This picture is what else I did besides work. I camped alot. It was alot of fun. This is one campout that Jenny (my sister) and I did to a lake called Island Lake in the Ruby Valley Mountains in Northern Nevada. It was amazing to be able to camp on a weekend all alone 2 miles from the road. Wow.

This is a picture that was a story in itself. Alison and I were taking pictures of a rock band and relaxing one evening because we had a babysitter for the evening. Just after the sun had set and things were getting "soft" for the evening a Bighorn Sheep jumped up on to the rock right next to Alison. This picture was taken with a wide angle lense. She was only actually about 7 feet from the sheep. It just walked up checked us out for a minute and then strolled away. Wow. This may have been our real big jaw dropper for the summer. Wow.

This is just our child when he was so much smaller. Wow. This was taken on the first week of August at about 9 months for him. Yes this is another adventure that we were on. This time it was Dad and Son and Mom was sleeping in. Great times...

Monday, March 26, 2007

It has been a while since I posted to my online journal but I am commiting to keeping it up for my own sake and for my families sake of trying to keep up with what I do. Anyway, here are recent pictures of our child, Zachariah. He is the joy of our lives (I can speak for my wife on this one...). Some of these pictures are from our daily walks we take together at the local nature park and some are from our trip to Death Valley. Regardless of where all recent.
This is a picture of Zach pushing the stroller at the nature park. The park is wonderful. It is about a five minute drive from our house and has miles of trails through a wonderful water and stream area. We almost feel that we aren't even in vegas when we go walking there.
This is Zach on a picnic we took to the Mt. Charleston Wilderness area about an hour from vegas. It was fun and Zach decided that he wanted to just eat peanut butter. Jiffy owes me advertising for this.
Another from our picnic, it definetly reminds me how small he is.

A picture from Death Valley. This is my son of 2 and 1/2 feet looking down at me and asking why I am on the ground again. This was taken at the lowest point in the USA, Badwater Basin at -282 feet. Zach loved the grate that you used to scrape salt off the feet with.

A Family portrait taken at Badwater Basin in Death Valley. Zach is always suspicious of the camera especially if he had just been crying like in this picture.

I hope that you all enjoy. Have a good night.

Chris
